Why is My Oven Not Cooking Correctly?

It’s time to heat up the ovens and make some comfort food, as the temperatures drop and the leaves turn. This is where problems can rear their ugly head or you recall that you had problems months ago but have ignored them until now, because your BBQ works perfectly.

This is a broad, complex question that has many answers. This blog will give you some ideas as to what could be happening. Scroll down until you find the complaint. I will address it.

* My oven doesn’t cook evenly

This is because you don’t allow it to heat up fully. Even if the light goes out, the little timer that rings after five to ten minutes is not enough time for it to heat up fully. This is double true for larger cavity ovens. It should take between 20-30 minutes to heat up. You should call a professional service provider if it doesn’t heat up.

Is the temperature correct? It is best to test your temperature by baking something with a time limit. You may have a problem if the cake is too brown. Don’t think that a low-quality thermometer will give you an accurate reading. A good quality thermometer is required to read the temperature accurately. A professional will calibrate your oven temperatures if you find that the temperature is not correct.

Be prepared to open the oven for food preparation or checking it out. Make sure you have your oven mitts and food nearby so that you can insert the food. The temperature drops sharply every time your oven is opened. Therefore, the longer the oven door is left open, the more it will drop. It must then return to temperature. This means that the oven door needs to be open for a long time to warm up. The oven door should be left open for a shorter time.

When your oven is heating up, take a look at the bake element. Is there any holes, dark spots (burn marks) on the element? Is it only part of the element that is red? You may need to replace the element. No problem if it’s a cartridge type. Get the model number and serial number of the unit, or the part number from the element, and call your local parts dealer for replacement (like us!) You can then plug it in. If your thermostat is hard-wired, it will require professional wiring. Do-it-yourselfers have caused many problems wiring their thermostats. Be careful! Always unplug your unit before you use it! !

* It is way too hot!

It would indicate a thermostat problem and would need to replaced. For this repair, call a professional. For more information, see the link above.

* The door opens and my gas oven goes “BOOM!”

This would indicate a buildup in gas before ignition. A delayed ignition is a problem that must be fixed by a professional. This will get worse over time and cause safety issues.

* My oven smokes and smells when I clean it myself.

There is a lot of preparation required before you can self-clean your oven. This is contrary to what many people believe when they purchase a self-cleaning model. It should be cleaned (really redundant, isn’t it?). first. You must get rid of all crumbs and goo. Otherwise, you will end up with a messy mess. Simple Green is great. You should also remember to clean those racks before you put them away, or they might become dull again.

* I’ve self-cleaned my oven and it won’t let me open it.

Yikes. We are sorry about that. It is likely that you have blown either the control board (worst) or the thermal fuse. In either case, you’ll need to contact a professional. DO NOT FORCE THE LATCH TO OPEN. This will only increase your repair costs.

I hope you find this information useful.
