Bridgehampton, situated on the South Fork of Suffolk County, New York, United States, is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 1,756 according to the 2010 census. Found within the town of Southampton on Long Island, Bridgehampton’s history dates back to the establishment of Southampton in 1640 when settlers started migrating eastward to the region referred to by the Shinnecock Indians as Sagaponack and Mecox. At the area near Sagg Pond, these settlers formed a community initially called Bullhead, but later renamed Bridgehampton, inspired by the bridge constructed over the pond. The Sagg Bridge, built in 1686 by Ezekiel Sandford, became the crucial link between Mecox and Sagaponack, giving rise to the name Bridgehampton. During the 18th century, the infamous criminal and memoirist Stephen Burroughs resided in Bridgehampton and played a role in establishing the town’s first library in 1793. His purchased volumes remained in the Bridgehampton Public Library until as late as 2002.
Bridgehampton holds distinction as the host location for the Hampton Classic horse show and a prominent road racing course, which played a significant role in American automobile racing history.
