If you live in colder climates, a superior-quality, expansive winter jacket can be essential. However, it can be difficult to keep clean. You might be curious about washing a down jacket, using your dryer and washer at home. It is easy and will make your coats look brand new.
Dry cleaning is an option but it is possible to save money and time by washing a down jacket yourself in a washing machine. Here are the essentials:
These steps can be followed 1-2 times a year to maintain your down garments in top shape.
How to wash a down jacket
Step 1 – If necessary, pre-treat your down jacket
Before you place your jacket in the washer, make sure to inspect it for any stains or spots. To get the best results, make sure to use your stain remover and some down wash.
Before washing, secure all buttons and snaps. Zip up zippers and turn the garment inside-out.
Step 2: Fill your washing machine
You should only proceed if your washer is front-loading. Top-loaders’ agitators are often too harsh to handle down items.
When washing a down jacket, it is important to choose the right water temperature setting. You should select the warm setting, not cold, before adding your down wash to machine.
Step 3 – Start the gentle cycle of your washer
Even if your machine isn’t top-loading, down coats can be damaged if the settings aren’t right. To avoid problems, you will want to choose the most delicate wash cycle for your machine.
You should not remove your items after the wash has finished. There is still one cycle to run.
Step 4 – Run a Second Rinse Cycle
Thick insulation makes down garments more effective in cold temperatures, but the same insulation can trap soap inside your jacket.
Run another delicate, warm wash without detergent or soap to remove excess detergent.
Step 5: Dry your down jacket in the dryer
It is crucial to know how to dry a down jacket correctly in order for it not to shrink. Place your down jacket in the dryer at the lowest heat setting.
You can now add 2 to 3 new tennis balls. They will help break up any clumps formed during drying.
Step 6 – Fluff your down jacket
While tennis balls can help reduce clumping, you will need to turn off the dryer every 15-30 minutes to remove large clumps from your hands.
As the cycle goes on, your clumped-together pieces will shrink and become easier to remove. Your jacket should look and feel brand new after about 2 hours.
These steps can be used to clean down sleeping bags. There are different ways to wash heavy bedding.
